Sweet pies are often used for desserts and savory pies for dinners. Sweet pies may be filled with fruit and berries while savory pies may be filled with different forms of meat, eggs and cheese along with different vegetables. Short history about pie filling The ancient Egyptians were the first to originate the baked good we today know as pie. They would make a form of pie that contained a honey filling covered in a crispy dough made from oats, wheat, rye or barley. Alongside the honeypie another recipe was discovered. A recipe for a children pie was carved into a tablet around 2000 prior BC, taking the invention of pie long back in the history of time. Hereafter the ancient Greeks were believed to invent pie pastry, and, in this era, it was possible to work as a pastry chef as well. Next up was the Roman’s who took the concept of pie even further were they made a pastry of flour, oil and water to cover up the pie filling of meat. However, this was an invention to preserve the juicy texture and flavor of the filling and was not made to be eaten. Along with the romans came roads, and thus their pies and recipe eventually found there was around all parts of Europe.
